Among Rocks and Myths

The Ionic Coast

From Etna to the sea: the wonder of Catania’s coast

If you close your eyes, can you smell the sea? Here, at the foot of the volcano, it takes just a short drive to reach the coast and find yourself in a completely different, yet equally stunning landscape. This is the charm of Eastern Sicily: within an hour, you can go from the quiet woods of Etna to the sound of waves caressing the lava stone shore.

Catania’s coastline stands out for its strong character, carved by lava and wind. Black beaches and volcanic cliffs alternate with hidden coves and well-equipped beaches, ideal for a refreshing swim in the crystal-clear Ionian Sea.

Sea and lava: a unique contrast

From Aci Castello, with its Norman castle overlooking the sea, to the Riviera dei Ciclopi with the sea stacks of Aci Trezza, Catania’s coast tells stories of eruptions, myths, and fishermen. Legend has it that these dramatic rocks were the boulders Polyphemus hurled at Ulysses.

Further south, the long cliff of Santa Maria la Scala and Stazzo reveals authentic fishing villages where time seems to stand still.

Isola Bella: a gem of rock and sea

Continuing along the coast brings you to one of Sicily’s most iconic and photographed spots: Isola Bella, just minutes from Taormina. A small island linked to the mainland by a thin strip of sand that appears and disappears with the tides. Clear waters, seabeds perfect for snorkeling, and lush vegetation create an almost tropical atmosphere. A magical place — perfect for a day by the sea or a romantic sunset stop.

Syracuse: where the sea meets history

An hour’s drive south takes you to another dimension: Syracuse — a city suspended between sea, myth, and culture. Founded by the ancient Greeks, with its island of Ortigia, white sandy beaches, baroque squares, and alleyways scented with orange blossom, Syracuse is a journey back in time. Here, the sea embraces history — swim beneath ancient walls, stroll among millennia-old temples, and savour a granita by the port.

The beauty that connects

The coast, like the volcano, is an integral part of the experience we want to offer you. Because Sicily is made of contrasts that merge in harmony: black rock and transparent sea, wild nature and the elegance of art cities.

We will help you discover the most authentic places — the ones we love too: hidden coves, fishermen’s markets, restaurants where the fish still tastes of the sea. Live Etna, but let yourself be enchanted by the sea’s call too — a journey that begins among the hills and ends with your feet in the water, under the Sicilian sun.
