Etna is not just a volcano — it is a living, powerful, majestic presence. It is the deep breath of Eastern Sicily, a giant of fire that for millennia has shaped the landscape, influenced life, and nourished the earth with its energy.
At over 3,300 meters high, Etna is Europe’s tallest active volcano and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2013. But for us, who live it daily, it is much more: a silent guardian, a spiritual guide, an endless source of wonder.
A landscape that’s always changing
Climbing Etna is like crossing different worlds. From dark, mysterious lava flows to oak, chestnut, and birch forests, up to the summit craters where all becomes wind and silence. Each slope tells a different story, each season changes its colours, each day brings a new discovery.
Here, nature holds a primal force, capable of astounding and teaching. This very force makes our glamping experience unique: a stay between sky and fire, silence and beauty.
Etna’s geological curiosities
- Etna formed about 600,000 years ago and is one of the world’s most studied volcanoes.
- Its activity is both Strombolian and effusive, alternating explosions with quiet lava flows.
- The volcano is constantly growing: in 2021 it reached a record height of 3,357 meters, varying with eruptions.
- It hosts over 300 side craters, many of which can be explored on foot or by e-bike.
- Beneath its surface lies a natural “engine room”: a complex system of magma chambers and conduits that make it one of the most active volcanoes in the world.
- Its lava flows have created lunar landscapes but also fertile soils rich in minerals, giving local agriculture its unique character.
Myth and Legend
Ancient legends were born around Etna: it’s said that the god Hephaestus had his forge here, and that the Cyclops Polyphemus lived in its caves. Etna has inspired poets, travellers, and artists for centuries, fascinated by its grandeur and unpredictable vitality. Walking its trails means not just exploring a place, but stepping into a timeless tale where nature, myth, and history intertwine.
